University studies in Brazil are based on an undergraduate programme (Graduação) that normally lasts four years. Postgraduate programmes (Pós-graduação) may be vocationally oriented or specialised (Atualização or Especialização) or academic in a more traditional sense, corresponding to Master's (Mestrado) or Ph.D. (Doutorado) programmes. Our thanks to Fernando Afonso de Almeida of Niterói for this information.
