In the 1980s a department for training translators and interpreters was affiliated with the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute (now called the Beijing Foreign Studies University), which trained Chinese-English interpreters for work at the United Nations. According to Fan Shouyi (letter of July 1994), these graduates had filled up all the positions in the UN Chinese Section by the late 1980s, deciding to stay there rather than implement a rotation scheme. The UN, which did not like the idea of frequent rotations, then ceased financial aid to the Beijing institute. The program at Beijing Foreign Studies University is no longer funded by the United Nations.According to Wolfgang Frick in Australia (February 1995), "there are at least seven or eight major universities in China with IT programs". The search continues. See also: Cay Dollerup, "The Translators' Association of China", Language International 6.5 (1994) 29-31. Address of the association: 24 Baiwanzhuang Road. Beijing 100037.
Hong Kong is listed separately because it was separate when this list was compiled.
